Ghost Towns of Oregon: Day 3: Hardman

{Hardman}

Originally, the land on which Hardman lies, in the high plains of Morrow County, was the sight of the rival towns of Raw Dog and Yellow Dog. Back then the two towns fought each other for stagecoach business. Raw Dog, being the larger town by just a few people, won the business of the stagecoaches and thus earned itself a post office soon after in 1881. The town's name was changed to Hardman after its first post master, David Hardman.

Many of the original buildings still remain standing as well as a few which are in ruin. As of 1996 there were 35 permanent residents and 25 out of state property owners. I cannot confirm these numbers but I can confirm that at least a few people still reside in Hardman. While taking photos I met a nice elderly man who was very welcoming and seemed happy to see someone interested in the town.
