Ghost Towns of Oregon: Day 2: Sumpter

{Sumpter}

To our surprise the town of Sumpter has seen quite a revival. There are quite a few residents, a visitor center, a small museum and library, a bar and a couple of small motels.

Many old buildings are still in tact despite the massive fire that destroyed much of the town on August 13, 1917. One of the most interesting buildings there was the "Black Market". It wasn't open when we were there but the outside of the building was interesting enough. It had tons of old tools and antiques hanging on the building walls and had a sign telling the building's tale. Apparently the building had been used as everything from a bunk house to a post office.

Being that Sumpter was an old mining town, many remnants still remain. The most interesting of these is the massive gold mining dredge. This dredge, along with two others, traveled more than 8 miles and extracted 10 t0 12 million dollars worth of gold. Unfortunately the last dredge stopped running in 1954 and was $100,000 in debt due to the cost of running the equipment.

The old trading post had a great painted sign too!
