Ghosts Towns of Oregon: Day 2: Whitney

{Whitney}

Whitney was a small town that never had more than 150 residents. It was originally a lumber company town but eventually turned into a hub that connected other lumber and mining towns via the Sumpter Railroad. Nibley Lumber Company set up a large sawmill in 1911 but eventually the town shut down because the railway was abandoned.

Many buildings still stand and are actually still used. There seemed to be only one residence in Whitney by someone who was raising horses. Many of the old buildings are in use by this occupant as storage.

The horses seemed to be spooked by our arrival and came right over to the fence and stared at us. The resident's dog also ran out to see who we were. It was fairly obvious that there are not many visitors in Whitney.
