Ghost Towns of Oregon: Day 2: Granite

{Granite}

This was a very interesting town. Settled in a small valley under snowy, tree covered hills, lies Granite. Once a small mining town, it has now transformed into a seasonal getaway for snowmobilers and outdoors people. Many old buildings still stand in Granite and the cemetery is still well kept.

The old one room school house still has the old wood furnace inside and is still used for town meetings and functions.

The general store is still in very good condition and has a fire hydrant in front of it that was made in Portland.

The cemetery told us a quite detailed tale of this small mining town. The last full time resident died in 1960 and in the early decades of the town many people died in the mines or at very young ages, likely due to diseases like pneumonia.

Many people still love to spend time in Granite and receive mail there. One of these mail boxes had a package resting on top of it.

At this point in my trip I am coming to realize that despite the death of many small towns in Oregon, all land is bought and sold and many people still enjoy rural life.
