Intro + Ch. 1

How/to/be/
a graphic/designer,/
without/
losing/your/soul

Adrian Shaughnessy

Every time I put this book down it leaves me inspired and hopeful.

I really enjoy the section regarding integrity and why it is important. I feel that graphic design is one of those fields where we are in a constant tug of war between sticking to our personal philosophies and totally selling out because we want to make money. Adrian addresses these concerns and how it is possible to work somewhere in the middle so that we can both eat and express ourselves without being slaves to our clients.

The key is to work subtly. In the section about presenting to the client it was mentioned that you should never tell your client that you created a solution because you liked it. There needs to be a non-personal line of reasoning in your work. This doesn't mean that you have to dislike your work. I means that just because you're really into garamond this month, that doesn't mean it's the right typeface for your client's project.
